Berkeley DB allows you to implement administrative tasks such as backups, checkpoints, and log archival as a part of your application. Once you implement these tasks and tune the database properly, it requires no outside administration and tuning. However, during the development phase, you still need troubleshooting and tuning tools that aren't a part of the application. Berkeley DB comes packaged with some useful utilities that you can use for that purpose.
