This year the International Union for Conservation of Nature put polar bears on the threatened species list, as their icy habitat quickly melted in rising Arctic Circle temperatures. The melt subjected bears to food shortages and even changes in mating and social patterns. And with “global warming” explicitly listed as their greatest threat, the polar bears became a symbol this year of the growing crisis. This was the year the world’s largest land predator was brought down by mankind.
