There seems to be a food safety scare every year. This time tomatoes were the unlucky culprit. A batch of the juicy veggies was tainted with salmonella farmside before they were shipped off to restaurants. The tomatoes ultimately sickened hundreds of Americans in 23 states. It was one of the country’s biggest food-borne illness outbreaks ever, and raised serious questions about the FDA’s inspection safety net (or lack thereof). But some cartoonists were just annoyed they couldn’t get tomatoes on their sandwiches for a few weeks.
