Chapter . Russia vs. Georgia
The quick, brutal military conflict between Georgia and Russia took the world by surprise. Georgia claimed Russia was trying to reunite the old Soviet Union, while Russia countered that Georgia was oppressing enclaves of Russians living in Georgia, and the Bush administration may have encouraged Georgia to provoke their nasty neighbor. Of course, Russia being the traditional bad guys, were the easiest to blame–and caricature. While McCain claimed, “We are all Georgians,” on the campaign trail, cartoonists drew bloodthirsty bears and Vladimir Putin’s hungry eyes.
