The summer games are usually a U.S. show, start to finish, and Michael Phelps’ historic 8-gold medal performance this year made the Beijing competition no exception. But this year, while America did come away from the Beijing summer games with its usual #1 spot in total medals, China got the most golds and came in a close second overall.

The Olympics were not free from their fair share of controversy, though. Between underage Chinese gymnasts and Phelps’ monster torso, there was no shortage of sporty cartoon fodder.
