With high gas prices putting the squeeze on consumers, smaller fuel efficient and hybrid vehicles sold as SUVs languished on lots. Thousands of jobs were cut, but even downsizing was not be enough to save GM and Chrysler from bankruptcy, and Ford was only barely treading water. After big bailout cash infusions, the big three still reported consistent losses every quarter and went to Washington looking for more help. Cartoonists, for their part, weren’t having any of it.
