It was on February 12, 2001, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the decision of the District Court where the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) claimed there was contributory and vicarious copyright infringement under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by Napster (A&M Records, Inc. v. Napster, Inc.). Napster was a peer-to-peer (P2P) music sharing service created by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. The band Metallica sued Napster for copyright infringement and racketeering kicking off a wave of interest and awareness from the recording industry. This led to the February 12, 2001 ruling that essentially put Napster out of business.
