The effort to write this book began with a conversation we had years ago about the difficulty of teaching business school participants what it means to “manage for value.” In our view, this topic incorporates four essential elements: (1) What is value?; (2) Why is it important?; (3) If it's so important, why aren't managers already doing it?; and (4) How can we help managers to do it? The more time and energy we spent trying to explain, the more we realized that none of these questions has a simple answer.
