No one said it would be easy to implement intrinsic motivation in an extrinsic world. In this chapter, we present a practical example of how we achieve it every time. Teachers are willing. “We just need strategies.” This is the typical ask from teachers who are struggling to get past the rewards and punishment malaise. Asking for strategies is like paddling up the face of Niagara. Won’t work. Strategies are extrinsic facing. For intrinsic motivation to take root in a classroom, it requires not strategies, but a mental shift. A neural shift is a mindset; it is an adaptive expert who understands the difference between adaptive and routine.
