Truly being seen is different from being seen. For the child in the room, it’s about survival. “Am I safe here? Will the teacher do something unexpected that will make me look stupid?” The reptilian brain is screaming survival. “I am a sliver of a second from freeze, fight, or flight. These are spaces I inhabit every day. It’s the only place I feel comfortable.
