“So why did you switch from architecture to English?” I wish I had a nickel for every time I was asked that question about earning a degree in architecture before studying literature in graduate school. I usually answer the question by saying that I always intended to study English, as well as architecture, and that pursuing both was always the plan. Or I point out that the two actually complemented each other—one the study of visual aesthetics, the other verbal. And as it turned out, the two did complement each other, but in ways I didn’t at all expect. But I will get to that.
