THE A-TO-Z ENTRIES

H.L. Mencken said, “A living language is like a man suffering incessantly from small hemorrhages, and what it needs above all else is constant transactions of new blood from other tongues. The day the gates go up, that day it begins to die.”

Many entries in “The Business Style Handbook” reflect the “new blood” in the language of business. Our intent is to promote consistency and clarity in all written materials while taking into account how language is used in the workplace. In addition, while some writing conventions are inflexible, many of the choices made in this book are a matter of preference. “The Business Style Handbook” strives to make distinctions between the hard-and-fast rules and these individual preferences.
