Introduction to Local Area Networks
A Local Area Network (LAN) typically interconnects personal computers, servers, and peripherals, and often connects to an outside Wide Area Network (WAN), usually the Internet. LANs allow information, hardware, and software to be easily shared between different users. Generally they are high-speed networks that cover a small geographical area. For example, a LAN is often installed within a department of a company, university, hospital, research center, or manufacturing site.
