23 Fourier Analysis
Introduction
This chapter considers Fourier analysis and associated transform methods for both discrete-time and continuous-time signals and systems. Fourier methods are based on using real or complex sinusoids as basis functions, and they allow signals to be represented in terms of sums of sinusoidal components.
Euler and d’Alembert showed that the wave equation (Equation 23.1) could be satisfied by any well-behaved function of the variable x + ct or x − ct (i.e., Equation 23.2).
