When I first met James (a composite), I was impressed by his business card and puzzled by the haunted look in his eyes. The two simply didn’t go together. The card said he was a top leader in a powerhouse organization, but the handshake and diffident “hello” said this was a troubled guy. Ten minutes into our chat, I understood why. The haunted look came from the pressures James faced—and from the fact that he knew he was not firing on all cylinders as he confronted those pressures.
