Teams are critical units within most organizations today, given the increasing complexity of work and the resulting need for coordination and collaboration across interdependent tasks. Ironically, while the emergence of teams has been a response to complexity, it is also true that teams themselves add complexity to organizations in that they are dynamic collections of individuals within a multilevel system. When functioning well, teams can be valuable levers of organizational performance, combining diverse skill sets and experience and permitting quick, flexible responses.
