In my interview with Tami Erwin, she was adamant that one of her three key lessons in leadership was ensuring men are invited into diversity and inclusion conversations. Which takes me nicely to three men who are three brilliant leaders. Three allies who believe in change, inclusion, and leading from the front. The men who spearheaded DIAL Global's Activist Council.
The Three Steves. Steve Murrells, then CEO of the Co-op, Steve Rowe from M&S, and Steve Ingham from Page Group. I've had the incredible opportunity to work alongside these men through running DIAL Global, working with them on our initiatives, and interviewing them for our summits and launch events.
All white, middle-class and male the fact they even shared the same name always caused to giggle whenever they appeared together to talk about any aspect of diversity and inclusion!
However, they shared far more important things than just these attributes.
They all recognise that change was happening too slowly.
It must be led from the top and become pervasive throughout their organisations.
They would make personal mistakes on the way, but this could not be an excuse to do nothing and was in fact an important part of learning.
They willing to share this learning freely to help others and create platforms to advance the agenda across-the-board.
They recognised there was no silver bullet and leaders had to take a long-term and holistic view to make a difference.
That more diverse inclusive organisations ...
