In September 2023, The Verge (tech reviewers, analysts and commentators) casually surveyed their employees as to how many apps they had on their smartphones.

The lowest was 16 apps, by someone who deleted apps they don't use on a regular basis, and the highest was 444 (the user confessing to taking 5 thumb swipes to get through them!).

Turns out, the average number of apps we have is 80. With that said, we aren't using all those apps. On average, we use 9 on a daily basis and 30 over a month.

That means more than 62 per cent of the apps on your phone might not be getting used. And further, 25 per cent are used once after being downloaded — and then never used again.

In case you are wondering, I have 97 apps on my iPhone, and I reckon I'm bang on the averages in terms of usage. (Note to self: clean up phone apps.)

With the volume of AI apps now being developed, I predict we will have similar experience around downloading, trying, experimenting with and having favourite AI apps.
