There are currently 18 Free Trade Zones in China, each named after the province or municipality they are located in. The first Free Trade Zone was established in Shanghai in 2013. Three more zones were added in 2015, then another seven Free Trade Zones (FTZs) were announced in 2017. While the first four FTZs were established in coastal areas, in close proximity to sea ports, the most recent ones are located inland, a move indicating the government’s plan to develop the economy of these inland areas.
