Of the myriad organizational dysfunctions I have been hired to help my clients fix over the years, most if not all had to do with leaders avoiding something. Ducking the big issues, I learned, had big consequences—not just for the business, but for everyone involved. Indeed, there are many sad stories I have left out of this book. People can and do get injured by choices not made. There are casualties. Having seen this pattern long enough and witnessed its devastating, yet unrecognized, impact, I took it as my responsibility—one might even say my purpose—to do what I could to help leaders square up to the undiscussable issues that plagued their organizations. This book has been the direct extension of that purpose.
