41. Staying in College Too Long

A mom once told me that she made her son, who was heading off to San Jose State University in the fall, promise that he would graduate in four years. No fooling around, she insisted.
The mother looked stunned, however, when I told her that it was highly unlikely that her child, regardless of his promise, would graduate on time. San Jose State’s four-year grad rate is just 7.7%.
San Jose State may be an extreme case, but most students who are attending college right now will not be graduating in four years. Many find it tough to make it within six years. In that period of time, just 58% cross the finish line.
