The Thank You Formula
With the ideal thank you note, you’ll lead the recruiter or hiring manager to the next step in your job application. In other words, it moves the job search from the past into the future. I call this my Past-Present-Future formula for thank you letters and e-mails:
◆ Past: Show gratitude for something the note’s reader has done for you (for example, he granted you a job interview).
◆ Present: Continue the conversation about the topic at hand (for example, mention something you’re doing or thinking about that’s relevant to the job you’re going for).
◆ Future: Encourage the next step (for example, refer to a second interview or the job offer).
