Cost- and profit-sharing problems go far beyond the “I cut, you choose” method and the other fair division situations and techniques we considered in Chapters 10 and 11. In those problems, the cake (and the estate, for that matter) was a given. But now we realize that sometimes we have to work together to prepare that metaphorical confection. We each put in different ingredients and expertise, and this influences what we expect to receive when the handiwork is complete.
