CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SKILLS

TOOLSET: A TECHNIQUE FOR RESOLVING CONFLICT

A technique developed by Jay Rothman (1997) is a useful way to approach and resolve conflicts at each of three levels: resource, objective, or identity (R, O, or I). The techniques apply in the world of project, programs, and portfolios, though they can be extended so far as to apply to international disputes.

The letters that make up the word ARIA each stand for a stage in the conflict resolution process: antagonism, resonance, invention, and action. (ARIA is also a musical metaphor—as in a musical aria—which alludes to the creativity needed to resolve conflict.) ...
