Organize for Intuitive Wayfinding

After you’ve determined what content your audiences need, you can organize it so that it’s easy to find. Organization of content refers to the framework for grouping, labeling, and relating content to make it discoverable by people (meaning the people the content is for and the people who produce the content) and machines (such as search engines and your content management system [CMS]). The process of doing this work is commonly referred to as information architecture.

Common artifacts used to document how your content should be organized and related are sitemaps and taxonomies. In this chapter, we’ll talk through ways to develop, document, and test these artifacts.
