It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
CHAPTER 7 Sourcing: Construct, Hire or Buy?
Combining bespoke makes, hires and sourced costumes so that they blend seamlessly as a coherent whole, reflecting the designer’s design, is a key skill for any supervisor. It can feel as much like a giant puzzle to get to the final complete rail of costumes, and much will rely on the supervisor’s instinct and judgment, as well as a modicum of luck when fabric sourcing, hiring and shopping.
At the National Theatre, ‘Costume Chats’ are routinely organized so that the director, designer and supervisor can meet with the actors individually to discuss how their feeling for the character they embody connects with the intended costume.
