The true product that the scenic designer creates is the finished set in performance in combination with all the other elements of production. In the creation of that design, he will use many art techniques to plan and communicate his ideas. He will create many beautiful objects, from drawings and color renderings to models and drafting, as he plans his design. The fact that his objective is the final set in performance is important to remember. Beautiful drawings or models do not necessarily produce effective designs. It is important for the designer to look at the artwork he creates while designing and communicating the design as steps toward a final goal, not finished products in themselves.
