Computer-based office tools now pervade the standard business and home environments. Because of the intimate role these tools play in how we do business, it's critical that we, as a society, have a clear understanding of what they do. Based on their mental models of how these tools work, users make decisions on what they do with documents they receive and documents they send out. Based on their mental models of these tools, managers make decisions on reasonable business practices. Based on their mental models of these tools, legislators and lawyers make decisions on what constitutes reasonable behavior and what constitutes negligent behavior.
