Organization cultures develop and take shape from within beginning with a founder or leader. But they are influenced over time by forces at work in the environment. Conventional wisdom is that cultures at their core—the assumptions as well as the values and beliefs on which they are based—change slowly, if at all. In fact, the greater the need for flexibility in responding to a changing environment, the greater the utility of a strong foundation provided by a culture with widely accepted assumptions, values, and beliefs that enable individuals to respond quickly and appropriately to a changing need.
