As elegant as the Japanese kimono is, it lacks pockets, a contemporary and often overlooked article of utility. What to do? In lieu of a pocket, objects were placed in small containers (sagemono) hung from the kimono’s sash (obi), and secured at the top by a netsuke, a toggle carved from ivory, bone, wood, or clay and decorated with lacquer and precious metals.
