Chapter 2LEADING WITH BUSINESS OUTCOMES

The United Center, on West Madison in the heart of downtown Chicago, was brightly lit and filled with excited fans decked out in Chicago Bulls regalia when the new Exalted CHRO and her leadership team arrived. Marcus had tipped off Pam about Bobby’s likely attendance, but she wasn’t about to let a sales exec ruin her team’s good time, especially after the day’s intense discussions. As they headed toward the Exalted corporate suite, Pam heard a familiar voice.

“Hey, 42!”

Pam smiled and turned to see her college basketball coach coming toward her with a warm grin and an extended hand. Well into his sixties, Shep Wheeler looked as fit as ever. “Coach, what are you doing here?” She knew he was still coaching at her alma mater, Pepperdine, in Malibu.

“I’m scouting high school players at a local tournament. I had a free evening, and another coach gave me a ticket. What about you? You’re far from home, too.”

“Actually, Chicago is home now,” Pam said, quickly filling him in on her new role and introducing him to her team members. “Since you’re here on your own, why don’t you join us in the corporate box? I’m sure there’s room for one more.”

“I’d love to, Pam, thank you,” he answered. “Since the last time we bumped into each other, I’ve been using data analytics even more—to identify talent, make recruiting decisions, develop our players. We even have an app to help us. I’ll tell you all about it.”
