Abstract

This chapter uses TikTok as a case study to explore the complex ecology of human and algorithmic actors in data-driven automated processes. TikTok provides a highly visible, everyday life example of the interdependent relationship between algorithmic and human agency on digital platforms. Every act of user engagement offers an opportunity for data extraction, in which each like, click, or comment is quantified, correlated, and fed forward into a predictive system that will then drive future content to its users.
