In 1918, Irving Berlin was writing songs for a military revue. When his assistant told him to cut a song, Berlin chose “God Bless America” because he was not satisfied with the lyrics. So, he stored the song in a trunk. Twenty years later, Irving Berlin changed just a few words:
Original lyric: “Stand beside her and guide her to the right with a light from above.”
New lyric: “Stand beside her and guide her through the night with a light from above.”
