In this chapter, I present a theoretical and developmental account of epistemic cognition. The account is theoretical in that it consists of a set of concepts and propositions. It is developmental in that it assumes a developmental basis for epistemic cognition.

The chapter is organized into six sections. In the first I briefly introduce the literatures of epistemic cognition. Next I define and discuss ten concepts central to the study of epistemic cognition. Then, drawing on these concepts, I present, explain, and justify 16 propositions that together provide a theoretical and developmental account of epistemic cognition.
