Your brand identity is the outward expression of your brand. It includes your name, visual appearance (logo/typography/style), personality and the way you communicate all of this (slogan). So, while clarity of purpose, integration of culture and definition of your core strengths are vital parts of the brand creation exercise, so too are how you choose to summarize this information visually in words and symbols (via your slogan and logo) and how you choose to personify your brand and relate to people (via the characteristics that your brand personality comprises).
