Compositing the Painting over a Moving Plate

As part of this “team” project, you’ll work on a file prepared by the Matchmoving department. Matchmoving programs automatically position tracking points that follow what is in the moving image. Typically, the best points to track are areas of high contrast. Through an extremely complex series of mathematical computations, the tracking program places the points in space and creates a digital camera that exactly reproduces the motion of the camera that photographed the live-action plate.

I won’t cover how to do motion tracking, or matchmoving, because it’s a book-length topic in itself. If you want to learn more, I recommend Matchmoving: The Invisible Art of Camera Tracking by Tim Dobbert (Sybex, 2005). ...
