I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to expand this book for Routledge. In the decade since its first publication, I’ve had the chance to teach these techniques to hundreds of undergraduates and a couple of dozen graduate students. Each time I teach directing, I try new approaches to teaching this material, and I learn from the responses and work of my students. I am grateful to them for all that they’ve taught me.

Two circumstances have greatly influenced my thinking about directing over the past decade.
