On-camera Flash

Most digital SLRs feature a built-in, popup flash unit, and although this type of flash is of limited use, it can be helpful as fill-in flash for backlit subjects.

Furthermore, if there are absolutely no other forms of lighting on offer, at least a pop-up flash gives you the ability to capture an image, as basic as it may be.

On-camera flash of this kind has the inevitable drawbacks of frontal lighting (almost shadowless and falls off in proportion to the distance from the camera).
