From ethical principles to information ethics
Abstract
The fact that electronic health records (EHRs) are patient analogues entails that they should be generated, stored, communicated, manipulated, and, in general, handled in an ethically appropriate manner. The present chapter identifies what constitutes ethically appropriate treatment as such and shows what this means with respect to EHRs by relating the principles of information ethics that should govern their treatment to the fundamental ethical principles that govern the treatment of persons. It thus sets the stage for a discussion for issues such as ownership of EHRs, privacy, and related matters in the next chapter.
