The ideas in this book stem from a tradition that believes there's nothing so practical as a good theory, and that no theory is much good if you can't put it to use. While that tradition has a long reach, I have had the privilege of working with four people who managed to keep it alive in these inhospitable times: Chris Argyris, Donald Schön, David Kantor, and Roger Fisher. Over the past thirty years, all four have influenced my research, my practice, and my theory-building, and I am grateful to all of them for their guidance, kindness, and insights.
