In addition to setting direction for the work group, leaders also set the values. By values we mean the way in which the work is accomplished. By the actions the leader takes and the words the leader uses, employees get messages about what the leader values. When these messages are consistent, employees know where they stand and what to expect. However, if these messages are inconsistent, followers could be confused. For example, if a leader says that she values customer service, then acts in a way that belittles or demeans the customer's needs, her message and actions could be inconsistent.
