35. STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
PRACTICING GOOD STREET photography requires a magic combination of stealth and brazenness. Though it’s easy to post up across a street and capture a photograph of strangers passing by at a distance, I get all kinds of feelings of nervousness and awkwardness when I want to photograph strangers at a more engaging distance, especially when they figure out what I’m up to! Add to that the complications we discussed in lesson 4, “Cultural, Legal, and Ethical Considerations,” of photographing people in different countries and cultures, and it’s enough to make you stick to photographing dogs and squirrels.
