14. VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL, OR SQUARE?

ONE OF THE first compositional decisions to make when taking a photo is which basic format, or aspect ratio, to use for the shot. The two primary choices are horizontal and vertical. Many camera apps also offer a choice of other aspect ratios, with the most common additional format being a square. As you’re composing the scene, let the subject matter and contents of the scene be your guide (Figure 14.1). In most cases you will have a pretty good sense of which format will work best. When in doubt, you can always shoot it in different ways and then decide later which shot you like best.
