6.1 INTRODUCTION
Video segmentation refers to partitioning video into spatial, temporal, or spatiotemporal regions that are homogeneous in some feature space [4]. It is an integral part of many video analysis and coding problems, including (i) video summarization, indexing, and retrieval, (ii) advanced video coding, (iii) video authoring and editing, (iv) improved motion (optical flow) estimation, (v) 3D motion and structure estimation with multiple moving objects [1-3], and (vi) video surveillance/understanding.
