Monomer is a molecule that can react with other monomer molecules to form a larger polymer chain or three-dimensional network in a process called polymerization.

The essential feature of a monomer is polyfunctionality – the capacity to form chemical bonds with at least two other monomer molecules.

Monomers can be classified as natural monomers and synthetic monomers. Natural monomers include amino acids, which are the monomers for proteins; nucleotides are the monomers for polynucleotides; glucose is the monomer for polysaccharides such as cellulose and starch; isoprene is the monomer for natural rubber.
