194 RNA: Ribonucleic Acid
RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a nucleic acid polymer where the carbohydrate is ribose.
Nucleic acids were discovered in 1868 by Friedrich Miescher, who called the material “nuclein” since it was found in the nucleus. Since the 1930s, numerous key discoveries in biology have emerged from studies of RNA, including seminal work in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular evolution, and structural biology. For now, more than 30 scientists have been awarded Nobel Prizes for experimental work that includes studies of RNA.
RNA has a structure very similar to that of DNA. It is a long chain of sugars linked together by phosphate groups. The really important ...
