We are all familiar with the scenario of the player on the bench who is constantly looking at the coach and often blurting out, “Send me in, coach.” If we reverse that idea and apply it to organizational life, we might ask, “When do you send in the coach?” How much playing time should the coach have?
While we are clearly sold on the value of coaching, let’s begin by stating the obvious: not every conversation is, nor should it be, a coaching conversation. There are important discussions that occur during a day at work that have extremely different purposes.
