I learned most of my management skills by mistake. At least in the American Business community, being promoted to a people management position is often like the first time you take an infant home from a hospital—there is no manual on how to ensure you make it through the first nine months. This was exactly my experience when I moved into my first people management role. Although it was an excellent learning experience, I improved my leadership skills at the expense of my team members. I stumbled into situations, sometimes difficult situations with difficult employees, and exited often wiser if not also humbler.
