When a person continues to underperform even in the face of clear expectations, or his or her behavior becomes intolerable despite direct, honest, and constructive feedback, there is one more tool in a manager’s set of management skills: the accountability conversation. Sometimes referred to as a “come to Jesus” meeting or being “called onto the carpet,” an accountability discussion can be a helpful intervention when done correctly.
