One of filmmaking's greatest – and most unique – strengths is editing. Once the early filmmakers discovered the ability to edit their shots – cutting closer or further away, to a different angle, to a different subject, to a different plotline altogether – the true power of cinema was unleashed. Here now was an artform that did not rely on the constants of time and place – storytelling was untethered and free to explore in ways that were previously unthinkable.
